CALM SPACES

A room your child wants to be in.

Thoughtful home environment design for children who feel overwhelmed by their space, shaped around how your child sees, hears and feels the world.

When a room isn't working

Some children avoid their bedroom, struggle to settle at night, or can't find and put away their things without help. Often the cause isn't behavior. It's the room itself: a color, a light, a sound or simply too much.

Calm Spaces is for families of children with sensory sensitivities, including children with autism, ADHD, anxiety or sensory processing differences, who want a space that feels calm, predictable and their own.

Calm, and ready to communicate

Because our work is rooted in speech-language pathology, we design rooms that support talking, choosing and independence, not just calm. We arrange materials so your child can request, choose and talk about what they want, and we show you how to use the room to build language every day.

What we look for

Every child experiences a room differently. We observe your child in their space and find out what's working against them.

  • Color: Is a wall color overstimulating your child, even one you love?

  • Light: When does the room feel too harsh, too dark or too busy?

  • Texture: What does your child seek out or avoid?

  • Organization: Can your child find, choose and put away their things?

  • Sound: What makes it hard to settle?

We test options with your child, not for them, using large paint samples, lighting, fabrics and simple choices your child can make.

Grounded in research and experience

Our approach draws on published research in sensory-friendly design and on how color, lighting, sound and texture affect children with sensory differences.
